Everyone in MGS apparently speaks like that because that’s how you speak in Japanese, when you acknowledge something you just repeat it as a question instead of saying something like “oh cool”, normally it’s localized away.

I’ve always wondered if that was the case. I’ve also noticed that a lot of translated sentences end with some variation of “isn’t it?” and figure there’s some similar linguistic quirk at play.

They did the same thing in Final Fantasy X. I found it a bit annoying ending every sentence with “ya?” At first I thought it was just a quirk they added to Wakka to make him seem more like a chill islander, but then other characters started to do it too, and I realized it was probably a translation from “ね?”

Feels similar to English sentences that end in “no?” , e.g.

        Bread tastes fantastic, no?

I’m not sure where that’s common or if its part of some regional dialect, but I know I picked it up as a speech habit somewhere in the US or the UK when I was a kid and moved every ~15 months because military brat.

Edit: Like, as a guess from somebody who doesn’t know the first thing about the Japanese language. I don’t mean to make that claim with any authority on it

It’s actually a practical way to answer, because it tells the person making the statement whether the listener heard them correctly.

This makes me wanna play MGS again. One of the few games - maybe the only one - I finished more than once. Being from the PSX era it still holds up well. It’s honestly a masterpiece and I’m so happy that I was able to play it as a kid when it was released.

FYI, Metal Gear Solid 1 was explicitly designed to be beaten by adults with jobs over a weekend.

You wouldn’t expect it with Kojima’s current design philosophy, but MGS1 is quite digestable.

There’s a game Where Winds Meet that tried to implement and LLM for some NPC interactions and some of them would reward you if you helped them with their issues. People found that doing the Solid Snake conversation method would always end up successfully helping them lol

It works well in a spy satire. The number 1 agent can’t even remember how to eat until their handler reminds them? It plucks you up from the ground and firmly plants you back in the silly pot
