We live in the UK. She didn’t go any further than this. I got her to download TOR and use the “old.Reddit” trick to bypass this so it was only mildly infuriating for her in the end
If she replaces “www.reddit” with “old.reddit” too?
Edit: fuckit. How to disable linkifying?
Fun fact: I can’t see the screenshot as I’m in the UK and your instance has taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning of the OSA and blocked access just in case anything’s accidentally not flagged as NSFW.
At least on lemmy we can just block instances that do idiotic things like that and still use the rest of the service
taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning
Them people won’t get hung on a technicality. You have to be nuts not to be paranoid these days.
With how the law is written, if you think anyone might ever make a mistake (likely), think the government might ever bother going through the hassle of enforcing it (probably less likely if you’re not running a big website), and don’t have loads of spare money to pay huge fines with or to pay an age verification service with (likely), then blocking the UK is the only way to be compliant. It doesn’t require a technicality. The law just doesn’t have any leeway for honest minor mistakes or small hobbyist websites.
The idiots here are your lawmakers and their supporters.
You know how everybody blames boomers for various things, which had nothing to do with them, they were merely victims of the capitalist corrupt systems they lived under? This is your generation’s failure to address the needs of the future. Good luck.
It’s really weird for you to start flinging divisive shit at someone who wasn’t being ageist to begin with, but if you wanna fling shit, start by telling me the average age of the parliament that passed this law.

Don’t forget to use obfs4 bridges
I wouldn’t bother with bridges honestly
If anything use snowflakes
Images should load from your local Lemmy instance right?
But checking now I see you, OP and the com are all from the same instance. So I’m confused.
No, OP is lemmings.world, not lemmy.world.
Oh shit, my bad. Was reading too fast.
But still, the image should load from your local instance right? So in that commenters case, lemmy.world right?
Edit: at least on my instance, it appears to go through a proxy on my local instance:
https://images.lemmy.zip/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmings.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F3b9a4c4b-3079-4e67-a5e2-0cd49074d81f.png
Do some other instances direct link images?
Some instances use the image proxy and others don’t. It seems that mine doesn’t.
Proxying was added after a bunch of csam attacks, where every instance admin would have to block it themselves. Now with proxying an admin can either block it themselves or the original posting instance can block it.
Yeah, dental issue. Sure.
This is a job for Norman Reedus
Simple delete Reddit
Once more Reddit! Yea!!! Just delete your account and move along.
I was banned 5 days ago for 6 days. Can I be strong enough not to go back? Please give me the strength to stay away.
I’m not gonna lie, I visit Reddit too, but without an account and in private, for 3 and only communities. Most of my time is Lemmy. You can start slowly like I do. People use to complain about dead niche communities here, but no one contributes like some users do every day here. Be the change and help communities grow, so you don’t have to go back to Reddit.
I got a 3 day ban, 2nd offence, on my 6th account, after the 3-day ban I abandon the account.
Only took 6 weeks this time and I was watching myself. They have dishonest moderation At Site wide level and I do not want to use it at all either, unless maybe two Shuffle people to the fediverse.
They have dishonest moderation
The mods are also unaccountable. They can (and do) simply ignore your DMs asking for details or reconsideration of your ban. And even if they do respond, the reasoning will be a short gibberish response that you cannot appeal.
Also many will remove your comments without telling you, it appears to be posted, I learned reveddit showed you what was removed.
But yeah mods work for free so allowing their petty tyranny is a selling point of the gig, not sure how lemmy works, did see one dude that said banned user arguing with people on another instance.
The audience over there is definitely a lot less intelligent than we have over here. And the bots & reposts & even bots COMMENTING are probably an overwhelming majority of the audience over there. It’s sick & pointless & a waste of time & I must break the addiction.
I would - if Reddit would allow me to log in.
Fuck Reddit and Fuck Spez.
Because Lemmy is mostly just a political soapbox, there’s not enough actual non-political content.
If there was some decent political discussion I wouldn’t mind it as much
The problem is that people here can’t stand to see anything they might disagree with.
You mean there are too many people who disagree with stuff they disagree with?
right wingers and the tankies are the only ones bitching about how thier political discussion isnt being discussed. i dont care either way, as long as it doesnt becomes obnoxious
I once made the mistake of saying something against Luigi and had the comments jump on me. This is as much of an echo chamber as anywhere else.
Would you rather have a place where you can’t talk about it or else you get banned and any dissent is killed and banned and it’s slowly getting worse day by day?
Or a foss freedom free structure platform where people can ACTUALLY talk about what’s on their mind? Hmmmm?
Sounds like you have some privileges you maybe need to realize you have.
No you don’t understand, they didn’t say they weren’t on Lemmy, they are as you clearly noticed. So they do have access to all the political discourse they want when they want it.
They said that Lemmy is too politically dominated and that some communities only live on Reddit rn.
I kinda agree, I use Lemmy 99% of the time but when a new Poe league releases the poebuildsdiscussion has interesting information about the game, not having political discourse in that community is irrelevant since that’s now what’s about. I’d prefer if it was here but there clearly is no interest, as a transition was attempted with the API exodus and it failed.
Yah, he is saying there isn’t much variety in subject matter. Sadly I still have to go to reddit to find a lot of topics.
Reading a discussion thread about some obscure TV show that there is no communify for on Lemmy is… “privilage”?
“Anything you have access to that I don’t” = “privilege”
The term has been badly abused.
post some non political content then. encourage others to.
Having apolitical fun over in !selfhosted@lemmy.world 😁
Edit: !imsorryjon@lemmy.world & !imaginarydragons@leminal.space look apolitical to me, too
I love it here but you gotta admit its like 50/50 politics and programming. It’s just like old old reddit
I want the Reddit from 5 years ago
Politics, tech, and Star Trek are the only three topics on Lemmy in any significant numbers, and even tech is politics half the time. The gaming communities are mostly politics about gaming, the porn communities are mostly dead, and forget anything more specific (other than Trek of course.)
Rofl what a piece of piss website
Can’t have kids looking at teeth! Next thing you know, they’ll want to become, forgive me for this, dentists.
“You’re a rabid anti-dentite!”
That’s a cavity in the law right there. Guess they don’t want us to brace ourselves for the harsh realities of molars online 😂
Actually in France they have that too, right ?
Well, was it a photo of an adult tooth or a baby tooth? Adult teeth are too mature for the younguns.
Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don’t subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don’t allow porn in the first place. It’s only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they’ve added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.
It does need better tagging but honestly thats not the issue here. This is because of the new UK law, simple as.
Also some shitty Republican states in the US.
Why not both?
They’re not mutually exclusive
True, but I dont want reddit’s shitty NSFW tagging system to distract from the important issue here
Upload a random selfie?
it’s not an image, they ask for live camera feed where you turn your head to the side to make sure you exist in 3d and stuff
I wonder if it could be fooled with video clips.
At least at one point that worked because there was a new article about the sudden surge of popularity from a YouTube video from like 2011 of a middle aged woman looking left then right whichb had successfully fooled the system. Guessing they fixed it since.
There were some reports of people using Norman Reedus from death stranding a little while ago.
Probably not, as it asks you to get closer and farther, but with how AI is, it’s only a matter of time until someone can get around that. The ID though I’m not so sure about
How would they handle sending them a faked driver’s license? I doubt they have access to the national database needed to verify anything on the pic of the license.
Facebook’s doing this too iirc
lol wtf!
I went to use Marketplace last year which meant signing into my old FB account for the first time since like 2013, even though I barely used it before that. Turns out it had been hacked at some point in the last decade and I had to upload a bunch of pics and ID stuff to get it back with a 48 hr review time or something…
Ooooooor… Just made a new account.
There was less important dt on that account then there was me giving Meta my latest update on where I am in life now.
Edit: Actually, just remembered, that old account a friend got my phone and changed all my details. I still get happy birthday messages in April because family get alerted, know I don’t have FB, and send an SMS. No, I was not born in April. I assume I’m still in a “It’s complicated” relationship as well.
Reddit isn’t worth it any more IMO, It’s all just downvoting and moaning over everything. Yes that happens here but at least people seem to talk more.
Even worse, it’s all just corporate and nation-state shill accounts. They’re the only ones willing to put up with all the bullshit required to post.
I know they say half of Reddit is fake but I’m willing to bet it’s more, they can’t be be real people with some of the stuff they come out with.
It as way more interesting content than Lemmy
Left 2 1/2 years ago, whenever I’m forced back because of some tech question I see the constant anger and anxiety in the comments. It may be smaller here but goddamn if it’s not more pleasant
