People love to see a woman put in her place. If you watch courtroom footage videos you’ll see a similar pattern- like 50-75% of reccomended and highly watched videos are just “this woman sucks, watch her get put in her place”
And the other videos aren’t “man gets put in his place”, they’re other groups someone might have issues with or that might be high profile and significant- cops, lawyers, judges, landlords, tennants. Bonus points if you’re also a woman. But if you’re a woman it doesn’t matter what group you’re in, you can be cast as the villain.
By the law of large numbers, there will always be more examples of women as the villains, and even if videos casting men as villains get posted, theres a way in which the algorithm will surface those that validate peoples resentment towards women. And over time, that impacts what kinds of things get posted in the first place, because the ones where women get put in their place do well.
And theres a way the fact that its always women who are the villain in the eyes of the algorithmically warps your perception of people. If you scroll through that reddit feed for an hour it’d be unsurprising to walk away thinking women might be shithead instigators of violence, but it would be hard for that to more severely misrepresent violence women are involved in. Now imagine how being on reddit for years and years and just getting exposed to those innocuously on r/all effects you.
The algorithm picks what’s engaging to people, and people are DEEPLY engaged by seeing a woman put in her place. If you learn to recognize the pattern you can see how algorithms warp our understanding of the world offline
