Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•So apparently full stops in texts are 'passive agressive' now. What other unwritten rules for texting have changed over the last couple of decades?
2·2 days agoI have conflicted feelings about it.
On one hand, I can see how in some circles it could be some sort of racist dog whistle, but on the other hand when a lot of people are using other skin tones and it’s mostly white people using yellow, it feels almost like default = white, and using the white skin tone pushes back on that a little.

9·17 days agoYep.
Football is a family of team sports that involve, to varying degrees, kicking a ball to score a goal. Unqualified, the word football generally means the form of football that is the most popular where the word is used. Sports commonly called football include association football (known as soccer in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the United States, and sometimes in Ireland and New Zealand); Australian rules football; Gaelic football; gridiron football (specifically American football, arena football, or Canadian football); International rules football; rugby league football; and rugby union football.[1] These various forms of football share, to varying degrees, common origins and are known as “football codes”.
And though the jokes about gridiron not actually using your feet much are understandable, kicking the ball might not be the reason any of these sports are called “football”. It’s actually possible it’s because they are played on foot, to distinguish them from horseback sports like polo, which were more of a thing at the time they were named.
There are conflicting explanations of the origin of the word “football”. It is widely assumed that the word “football” (or the phrase “foot ball”) refers to the action of the foot kicking a ball.[13] There is an alternative explanation, which is that football originally referred to a variety of games in medieval Europe that were played on foot.[14] There is little conclusive evidence for either explanation.

I don’t think he listens to what people tell him anyway. I think he just has the whole conversation in his head and then remembers it that way.
