In Katmai National Park and Preserve, one bear has grown so large he’s become a global sensation. Otis, officially known as Bear 480, has been crowned the fattest bear in the wild after packing on hundreds of pounds for winter hibernation.
At an estimated 1,000 pounds, he dwarfs the average male brown bear, which usually weighs closer to 700 pounds. Each fall, his size makes him a frontrunner in the park’s popular Fat Bear Week contest, where the public votes on which bear has bulked up the most.
