I’m not the previous poster, but the French Revolution > Reign of Terror > Napoleonic Era > etc. comes to mind. A cycle of despots one after another.

She may have single-handedly precipitated the slide into fascism in the US.
If she had simply resigned from her position when she began experiencing health issues, it would have allowed her successor to be nominated and approved under a democratic administration.
Instead, she wanted to retain her position of authority as long as possible, and so her greatest legacy to the US became Amy Coney Barret appointed by Trump and the subsequent series of 5-4 votes in favor of furthering his agenda.
I think it was considered normal for couples to argue pretty much daily.
How many people grew up thinking that marriage is supposed to look like that ? My gawd. People must have been miserable.
Probably likely for a lot of folks. It took so. damn. long. for divorce to be made legal across the western world, and even longer than that to get to the point where the burden of an unhappy marriage was no longer outweighed by the scandal of divorce.
Before no-fault divorces became common, unhappy couples would sometimes even voluntarily fake an affair just to act as “proof” of adultery for a divorce.
You gotta throw me a bone here Mickey, what am I even looking at?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should we be doing, individually, to increase Lemmy's userbase?
2·3 days agoThanks, count me as a new happy subscriber!
To be honest, Elden Ring is the only Souls game I’ve played and so it’s the only one of any real interest to me for now, but I am appreciative of the tags used in the post titles that allow me to filter out the content from other games I’m not interested in seeing. Glad to see content is alive somewhere!

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What should we be doing, individually, to increase Lemmy's userbase?
10·4 days agoI think people just miss their niche interest communities.
For example, I love Elden Ring, but !eldenring@lemmy.world hasn’t had any new posts in almost a year. Meanwhile the Elden Ring subreddit has a bunch of posts just from the last few minutes.
Still not enough to make me go back to Reddit, but I admit it’s something I miss and something that just can’t be recreated without more people.
I wanted to build a computer a couple years ago, but the prices they were charging for individual components even then just didn’t make sense compared to buying a more affordable, comparably strong pre-built.
I can’t imagine trying to build one now with these RAM prices, it’s insane.
Did the GPU shortages ever really end, though? We just have more shortages on top of it.
I don’t believe the default Lemmy interface supports it, yeah. I sometimes use Alexandrite and I don’t think it does, but not 100% certain. Haven’t tried Photon or any of the other options that may be out there.
If you’re on Lemmy.world, try:
Aledandrite - https://a.lemmy.world/
Voyager - https://m.lemmy.world/
Old Reddit - https://old.lemmy.world/
Photon - https://p.lemmy.world/
Tesseract - https://t.lemmy.world/
Not sure what others may be out there, but maybe one of them has the setting you’re looking for.
Edit: Alexandrite does seem to have a “system default” option, so if your system automatically updates theme based on time of day, that may work.
Edit 2: Seeing similar on each of the others, though how well each works, I’m not certain.
Are you using an app, or one of the additional Lemmy frontends like Alexandrite or Photon?

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is Lemmy.World an authentically "modern leftist" community?

Maybe Christ is just a euphemism for cock
It never hurts just to start tossing out applications and see what you get. The best way to get better at interviewing is to do more interviews. Even if you think your odds of landing something are low, just go into it with the mentality of getting more practice until it feels comfortable. And who knows, you might be surprised by a good offer.
But I would also recommend being selective with where you apply, too. Basically don’t sell your skillset too low, and don’t apply for the types of open-ended jobs that will attract thousands of applicants and only waste your time. It can be absolutely soul crushing to send out 100 applications and never even get a response from 90 of them, but a good opportunity will come along eventually and you can develop a sense of which listings aren’t worth your time.
I just assumed they were the weird emphasis quotes people do for some reason
I had to look up his bio (where I learned that he had just died, this post makes more sense now) and found that he actually had no biological children, so he would actually be eligible for a Darwin Award.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•It's dinner time, and you have to put together a meal with only ingredients already in your house, no going out for anything. What are you making?
3·10 days agoHey, it’s a thing, blame the Japanese!
You fry the rice in ketchup, serve it in an omelette. Optionally top with more ketchup.
Can sub the ketchup for demi-glace if that is more palettable, but that’s way more effort than I’m willing to put in for lazy time breakfast food.

6·10 days agoFry the rice and egg up together with some soy sauce, add some garlic in whatever form, bonus points if you have any white pepper, suddenly elevated.
Or even just some ketchup, make omurice, can’t go wrong.

3·10 days agoRisotto plus some random protein, not sure which but I have options.
Risotto is easy to make and doesn’t look like much, but it’s hard to say no to pure carbs, butter, and cheese.

Not that Haiti was necessarily at fault for that, though. It was either brace for further conquest, or submit to incredibly harsh terms of peace that would still see the country stripped of all its wealth.
