If I’m not mistaken they operated in neighboring Tethford Mines, which, ironically, is actually much bigger than the Asbestos mine. In fact I believe it was at one time the biggest asbestos mine in the world. I’ve been there, the destruction is absolutely mind boggling. The highway runs through the tailing piles, which are still highly contaminated with asbestos and various other heavy metals, all of which leach into the Bécancour river. Here’s an interesting piece about it from Radio-Canada (it’s in French but the auto translated subs should do a decent job since there are actual captions available): La semaine verte | Tethford Mines Restaurer l’impossible. Re-greening is happening though and seems to have some success: La métamorphose verte de l’ancienne mine Lac d’amiante à Thetford Mines
The kids there know what’s up: L’amiante, j’en mange

I think it’s important to add some nuance to what you said. While it’s true that computers ship with Microsoft keys. One can remove them and install their own. I run all my machines with self signed bootloaders/kernels and it works great!
