You can pay for some things using crypto. For example, VPNs often offer that as a somewhat anonymous payment method. I’m pretty sure 99.9% of transactions are for trading and crime/scams though. The original idea of a decentralized payment system has pretty much faded into the background.

Europe@feddit.org•Is cafeteria food served across European schools better than America?English
9·7 days agoWhen I started high school in Germany, there wasn’t even a cafeteria. You could only buy some snacks or crappy pizza slices from the caretaker. During lunch break, students mostly ate food they brought from home or went to some nearby food places. Later on, they built a proper cafeteria and the food there was pretty decent. It was provided by a local catering company and you had the choice between 2 different menus each day (vegetarian and non-vegetarian). There was a decent variety, it usually contained fresh vegetables and it tasted fine. Personally, I wouldn’t say it was as good as home-made, but I guess that depends upon your home.
I haven’t been to a US school or a prison, so I can’t really compare it to those. Though from what I’ve read, prison food isn’t particularly bad here either, so maybe it’s not even that different, IDK.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the point on buying from small business/indie dev. if they might become big and greed eventually?
15·7 days agoApplying that logic, it seems to me like you can’t ever use money for anything. What if that open-source project you donated to goes paid? What if the friendly corner store owner turns his store into a billion dollar chain?

Technology@lemmy.world•Bring Back the Burned CD— They’re a love language. And a reminder of the hope we once had.English
1252·11 days agoNothing’s stopping you from burning a CD right now. But ultimately, these kinds of nostalgic memories are less about the tech itself and more about remembering the happy times of youth. Bringing back the burned CD won’t bring those back I’m afraid.

Europe@feddit.org•Anti-Drugs activist Amine Kessaci is running for office in Marseille, France 🇫🇷. The drug mafia killed his two brothers. He received a message saying he is next. English
43·18 days agoFrom what I’ve read about him, he’s not. He’s fighting the cartels, but he’s actually criticizing purely punitive measures by the French state for not fighting the root of the problem. He wants to provide a way out for young people who got involved with gangs and drug traficking.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's your opinion on utilizing our resources to further our ability to travel in space?
281·21 days agoIn the short term, we should probably focus on fixing our problems on earth. Some space research should still be funded, but not as a major priority. Once we finally have our shit together, we can start exploring the stars.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What kind of car do you drive, and what kind do you wish you did?
2·21 days agoKia EV3. It’s generally nice and I don’t want a different one. But I’d prefer not to drive a car if that were practical for me right now.

Looking forward to trying it out. I’ve been teaching myself Freecad for a while and I’ll be honest, it has been a mildly infuriating experience at times. Still seems like the best option for a free CAD tool without ridiculous licensing terms though. This looks like quite an improvement in any case. Hopefully it’ll even fix the regular crashes I’ve been getting.
