As others have pointed out, the compute cost of inference is only one small part of the puzzle. All the frontier model providers - which OpenRouter gives you access to - are massively raising their prices in desperate bids to recoup the cost of model generation in the first place.
There’s really no hiding from the token apocalypse unless you’re running a model on your own hardware.

The unique thing about GitHub Copilot (and all the other vibe-coding tools) is that they’re speed-running the playbook because this shit is not profitable. It can’t be. Their costs scale up with usage, unlike every other business that can take advantage of economies of scale, so they’ve skipped the slow, steady enshittification phase and jumped directly into the “squeeze blood from this stone to keep the scam going a little longer” phase.

Yeah, my completely non-techie family members could become “hackers” easily that way.

Out of curiosity, is his work on any of the “frontier” models? Or is he developing the small, open-weight models you can run on sufficiently beefy personal systems? There’s a world of difference there in terms of ethics.
I work with a few AI engineers myself, and I don’t think I know anyone who hates companies like OpenAI and Anthropic more than they do.

Dude… Your kid’s a supervillain.
(I joke, but still… AI? Wish it was something less destructive.)
I’m just holding out hope that my company still has enough sanity left to keep from firing the team responsible for its (incredibly busy, active, and above all publicly-facing) developer portal in favor of having a vibe-coder destroy maintain it. At least long enough for the AI bubble to finally burst.
That I still have one. I’m a software developer, and my entire industry has lost its mind.

Fun pattern with 8s
Now from there, you’d think the pattern breaks, but it’s actually just the first sequence in a larger pattern.
Then it gets interesting:
And it keeps going like that.

Yup. Money is important only in that it leads to control and power.

True, but misses the point. The user interface is basically broken now, and the fact that you can scroll down to something useful doesn’t mean the broken bits don’t matter.

Should actually be “Trouȝt.”

Why are you like this?

It’s listed as medium severity and appears to require the hacker to already have terminal access to the system. It’s also already patched and there’s a quick and easy workaround if your distro doesn’t have the fix yet.

Should actually be “Thy reply appeareth.”

Should actually be “thou shalt.”

And that’s why I’m never buying a new NVIDIA device ever again. They get no money from me.

Fight.
The only thing - the only thing - these fucking oligarchs care about is money. That’s it. Nothing else. Not even their own lives. Money is all. So deny it to them.
Buy used computer equipment. Never new. Stop using Google. Stop using Amazon. Definitely 100% stop using ChatGPT, Claude, or any other LLM. If you feel you have to use an AI model for some reason, save up and invest in a machine capable of running small models locally.
Make the AI companies bleed. And at the same time, reward other companies that do the right thing. That want to sell something other than dumb terminals with AI wired in.
I mean, fuck, there are plenty of companies that hate this shit too, because it destroys their businesses. Not their business models, their actual fucking businesses. No game developer or PC manufacturer is any happier with these AI monsters eating all the RAM than we are. They know if it persists it’ll put them out of business. It’s not like Dell or HP wanted to just stop being able to sell hardware.
CoXpilot
The market is insane. The valuations for stocks connected in any way to “AI” have no connection to reality whatsoever.
