I wasn’t being eurocentric. I was being Asia-Africa-Australia-South America-Europe-Canada-Mexico-Central America-Caribbea centric. The only country where most of the right want to reduce gun safety is USA. We are talking in an international forum, so here international concepts count, not nation-specific. Typically in the world right-wingers are for safety and typically in the world the politics of the Democrat party count as right-wing.

When in a conversation not specific to USA it is not okay to speak as if everything was about USA. It is not okay to speak as if there was a left-wing party in US Congress or Senate and it is not okay to claim that the right wants more dangerous gun policies.

And here we’re talking about something that takes place most prominently in UK and secondly in a bunch of other countries, but absolutely not in USA. USA has nothing to do with this, so don’t be as insolent as you were.

(Also, for example Australia is not in Europe. Learn some geography.)

Doesn’t change political narrative being pushed by both major political parties in the US, where in the left supposedly wants guns banned, and the right wants everyone armed.

How is US relevant in this discussion?

Online banking passwords? “Find”? How the hell? Have you lived in a barrel?

There is a 8-number code that I’ve got in my head, then there is a 4-number password that I’ve also got in my head. And then a paper with single-use passwords which work so that when I have given the two correct passwords, it tells me which code to use. And no way am I giving full access to my bank account for my children!

Some banks also have a system where you log in with your fingerprint and then a four-number code using an app on your phone.

I think the money on the parents’ accounts is a much better motivation for the children than an ability to watch porn. And yet, I have not heard of anybody’s children actually having found out their parent’s bank passwords.

And also: Maybe there really is a child that installs a keylogger on their parents’ computer and steals the password paper from the parents’ wallet and also happens to really want to go out of their way to watch porn… Well, then there is. Such a child is already in so many ways in trouble that I don’t think seeing porn will traumatize them at all. Such children are few and it makes no sense trying to build a 100-percent foolproof system. In any case, using online banking passwords is a lot more reliable way than the weird hocus-pocus being done now.

In Finland you could handle this by having people authenticate using their online bank passwords. A LOT of government stuff already works that way, so it would require almost no extra coding at least over here. I wonder why it cannot be done the same way in England?

The right is typically for gun control. Only one country comes to my mind where they aren’t. Which one were you thinking about? Or is it more common than I thought?

(Or did you just happen to forget that 95 % of Earth’s population exists?)

EDIT: Oh, and also: It is important to keep in mind that it’s the same within the left. There are also left-wingers who prefer authoritarianism and ones who despise it. I do agree with your sentiment: The left-right division does not work very well in our current world. Need to take best parts of everything, but most importantly, make sure we don’t end up under totalitarian rule!

That’s not because of an organization trying to make Finland ignore the EU legislation using strategies that then cause us to run headlong against a wall, though.

This was because PalPa, the company responsible for maintaining Finland’s recycling system was (and is) a corrupt heap of shit.

It’s owned by the largest breweries and they used it for keeping smaller and foreign companies out if business. You couldn’t get a right to use Finnish bottles –> You had to pay a steep punishment tax for using non-recyclable bottles.

They successfully argued that washing bottles from that many sources would be impossible to organize, so the EU required PalPa to start accepting crushable PET bottles, which are easy to produce without any active coöperation by PalPa.

PalPa(…tine?) was hoping that they could still somehow block this from happening, so they framed the change as Evil EU forcing Finland to stop washing bottles. And when the PET bottles were indeed accepted in the end, they dismantled the whole bottle washing system in Finland so that they wouldn’t be held accountable for their lies.

So, it’s the same thing that happened to our regional bus network (vakiovuorot), basically. And what’s currently happening to our railways.

In a way yes, probably. But at the same time, it means you have one less awesome thing to enjoy on this planet.

Putting more stuff in washable bottles than before happens in many places? Are you sure?

In Finland the deposit for bottles of one litre or more have a deposit of 0,40 €.

(And what many foreigners don’t understand is that we are not anti-recycling, so it’s not a problem that the deposit is inside the prices you see in the shop. So, if you see 1,59 € as the price of a bottle of lemonade, 1,59 € is what you pay. Many countries have a system where the deposit is added to the price so that people would think more negatively about it and they’d sell more of the bottles with the text “NO DEPOSIT!!” on them, so people coming from those countries are easily confused by not having to add anything to the prices in their heads.)

I once told a person why I’m not hiring them, unprompted.

I was looking for fundraisers to find donors for NGOs, and a young woman I was interviewing had actually been living abroad in an exchange program that kind of included tasks that ought to have brought her skills useful in the job. But, with no amount of prying and hinting was I able to get her to mention that. Or in any other manner do anything that sounds like they were able to convince anyone about anything. So, I told her that. Something like “Okay, I’ll say this outright, even if that’s unusual. I will not hire you, and I’d like to tell you why”, and then explained that in their CV they mention this this and that, and those are actually cool things to have done and would need to be advertised. And continued: “You would not find enough donors to cover a reasonable part of your salary costs, and you’d be more of a burden for the organization than an asset. There are laws about how much of an NGOs costs can go for its own organization, and for your part the percentage would be far too high. You would feel guilty for wasting a good organization’s funds and endangering their permission to gather donations, and your life would be worse because of that guilt. Maybe in some years you’ll develop the skills you need for this job and should apply again, but now is not the time for that. I seriously wish you good luck finding a summer job! You’ve got a good attitude for a worker and there are companies that would really need the likes of you, but you’re not cut out for stuff related to sales yet.”
