You know, Steve Jobs invented and programmed the Mac, the iPhone, did everything for the iPad himself, programmed MacOS and created iTunes by himself. Elon Musk developed several rockets, multiple cars, his own AI and is an expert in building tunnels and hyperloops - according to people on the internet.

Yes, totally. First of all, that is not something your average guy from the street can do. Yes, the AI is doing some hard lifting here, but you need to have the idea, the motivation and the stamina to do something like that.

And let’s be honest: I would also be impressed by a guy hiring some software devs to build a FOSS photoshop clone in record speed.

I’ve tried his photoshop clone and it really is impressive. Yes, it needs more work. Yes, there are rough edges. But for something that one (!) guy build in a few weeks while also building several other programs? Holy crap, that is awesome and also a little bit scary. That really is a usable copy of photoshop.

I do not like takes like this. AI companies are, of course, garbage. But you can build great things with their technology. So posting some memes saying that every AI product is useless like a slot machine is kind of blind to the capabilities of what you can do with them. It’s like all those old people back then telling everybody that they do not need computers and that computers suck or that the internet is bad and you should read a book.

Chromebooks were big in education where admins had to manage a fleet of devices for students. In that context a cheap, locked down device makes sense, because you know how students behave.

If you buy something like that for yourself, you are doing something wrong.

Get a raspi or some thinclient. Every of those sticks I’ve touched was totally crap. Slow, awful software, some come with malware preloaded and the whole experience is crap. There is enough space behind your TV for a raspi.

Yeah, it’s infuriating how much potential they are leaving on the table here. My camera has a clock to put the correct time into the exif data, but it’s not possible to set up the camera so that it does take a picture every few seconds or every few minutes. If you’ve been at Reddit for a while, you recognize all those blantant bot-driven reposts. It’s really something. The same old screenshot of some tweet being reposted hundreds of times. The same questions in /r/askreddit with the same old answers. Memes that are repeating on a fixed schedule. The same ragebait content enraging the second generation of a family.

There’s also the root problem of employees having no agency to kick out misbehaving people. There’s this whole “the customer is king” ethos in American commerce and this is enabling the worst people to harass people without any consequences. If you are getting kicked out and banned from most stores in your town because you are an abusive asshole, you might think again about your behavior and maybe even change. If everything that is coming from your bad behavior is that some random employee is getting fired, yes, this will enable even worse behaviour.

Wikipedia is out there and it’s really easy to contribute if you’re not an idiot and read the sensible editing rules beforehand.

When companies are not able to produce enough to satisfy demand and are actively stopping selling to certain sectors and harming them, they should lose their patents. RAM companies are actively harming all of us by selling their products to the AI companies and leaving us all without RAM, so we should encourage alternatives.

I really do not want to stick a camera to my helmet. I’m wearing that helmet as safety gear and I do not believe that it is safe to mount robust things with batteries to something which needs to absorb the impact of a fall.

History is full of really awesome love stories. Letters of Note is a great resource to start exploring those emotions. They also have a book simply collecting love letters and you really might want to get this. Those “traditional gender roles” the conservatives are pushing are not real. They were not real back then and are a power fantasy of bad people. There were gay people back then. And trans people. And men and women loved each others. Others were in loveless or abusive relationships. Go and read a few of those letters. They are awesome.
