  • It has ruined communication.

I like this and want to add something I think will be significant as generations pass. The fact that it encourages or at least seems to normalize incorrect spelling and grammar. I see 'break/brake" being used incorrectly so many times I have started to question it when I am using it now. When things are published normally, there is someone checking for grammatical errors and such. With social media so much text is being “published” with no checking whatsoever and I have a feeling that it is going to start affecting people in ways we haven’t thought of. It also is a little telling in my opinion of how abhorrent our current education system is.

  • My first thought is a Raspberry Pi with a DAC hat. Then you can wire up some buttons and put it in a case. You could then program the buttons to do the basic functions like play music, skip, volume, etc. You could also use that same concept for an Arduino board and use it to control a computer or pad. My Mom had a muscle disease and it got to the point where she couldn’t hit ctrl-alt-del to turn her computer off at night. She also couldn’t hold down the shift key and type at the same time. I built her an arduino board with a box that I mounted a flip switch that would hold down shift for her as long as it was flipped, and then another button that when she hit it would type the ctrl-alt-del combo so she could do that all one handed. Both the rpi and arduino have pins that you can attach switches to and use them as a keyboard or mouse.

  • On very busy channels, and this will probably sound weird, but it all just scrolls too fast to have a conversation. It’s like being in a room at one corner trying to talk with someone in another corner and the room is filled with other people all trying to have conversations using the same voice level. The only other analogy I could come up with is trying to have a conversation with a race car driver using his or her window mid race, and you just yell at each other every time they pass your corner.

Even when it isn’t flying by on a busy channel sometimes it’s just endless scrolling to find the beginning of the conversation or where you need to get it to get an idea of what’s going on. And their solution to that just made things worse in my opinion…

It has it’s purpose, and for my group it’s voice and being able to store notes that we can scroll back through if we need.

  • In our made up scenario here I have a couple of thoughts. First, they make an entry in the log since they can write to the drive. Or find out the retention period of the logs, and date the file before any existing log entries and then just state that it has been on there long enough for the logs to roll off. My point is that you cannot trust these logs when a drive can be written to externally. Another option, remove the logs, install them on a windows machine not connected to any network. Change the date/time to something you want, boot windows and drop the file on the machine, making a log entry. Maybe resort the logs, or just copy the log entry back over to the original machine. There are plenty of ways these logs could be faked or modified. When someone has physical access, all bets are off and everything becomes suspect.

Btw, 20 years ago I had to testify in court as a photographer that the images I had, that were introduced as evidence to the court, were the originals and that is what I saw through my viewfinder. So none of this is new, and courts have always needed to have provenance.

  • As a rider for 40+ years now, I can honestly tell you that I still get the jitters at times, especially when I am on a new bike but I don’t compare that to stress. I find that even when I am nervous on a bike, I still get off the ride and have less stress than when I started the ride. It’s been a long time since I was a new rider, but I have watched a couple of my kids get started and remember the feelings when you are trying to figure out shifting, clutch work, braking and the rest of what goes along with it. I think you nailed it on the head though, and experience will make that part of the ride all but disappear into muscle memory. When you get comfortable with that part of the ride I find that’s when it becomes more of a relaxing time for me. That might sound wrong, but it’s not like I let my guard down, it’s more like the feeling when you are so focused on one thing that everything else fades into the distance. When I am out for a ride things like bills, work, all of the stressors of life just take a backseat. I also don’t play music while I am riding, although I do have a couple of tunes that my brain seems to just belt out as I am going along. That’s when you know you are in the zone, when you start singing a song to yourself. I have two songs that come up all the time, and oddly enough they aren’t really the type of music I listen to, but hey the brain is a funny thing. First is the Smokey and the Bandit song - Eastbound and down… And the second for some ungodly reason is the opening theme song for Gilligan’s Island. Don’t ask…

I am curious what other riders have as their head music when they are riding. Now get out there and ride more with your Dad. I am sure it means a lot to him to have you along. You are welcome to ride with me as well. And let me know what song pops up in your head when it happens.

  • Totally agree. The amount of hp this bike has blows my mind. But the thing like I said is just how smooth it is in the delivery and execution. The shifts are smooth and effortless, and the throttle is just smooth. You can dial in the power you want with different settings, so you can tone it down for things like riding in the rain. It’s so much different than my 01, which was just raw power and no electronic goodies other than fuel injection. I love having both, and have a ton of miles on the 01 which I am looking forward to matching with the new bike.

  • My son works at a motorcycle dealer. He sends me a pic of a bike they just got in. A CBR1000RR-RSP. Well after putting on my boots and asking him if it’s for sale, they said they would sell it to me. The person who ordered it had to back out so if I could make it down there it was mine. I hopped on my 2001 CBR and headed to the store where I bought the bike. And to answer the question, YES it was definitely worth it. That motorcycle is the absolute hands down smoothest machine I have ever been on. It’s like riding a stick of butter down a teflon pan. I still can’t believe I own one as I honestly never even thought I would ever even see one in the wild.
