What’s up with the animosity for Proton around here? Did I miss something? What did they do?

I don’t remember all the details but their CEO said some unprompted pro Trump things and the retraction was halfhearted. That, combined with a couple cases like freezing journalists accounts that may or may not have been compromised (thus permissible to freeze imo), harmed their reputation among this community.

I’m not in the loop enough to be an expert so please correct me. Their solutions currently work for me as a rando nobody that wanted a fast VPN that wasn’t YouTuber shilled.

They also just recently banned a journalist after a request from a questionable cyber security company that was being reported on. They ignored and refused to reinstate the account until the story started making the rounds on social media, then made a very poor attempt at ass covering excuses.

They also ratted out environmental activists to a kinda neo-fascist government as if they were christian terrorists.

What’s next? Proton Date? When can I date local girls while they know their rejections will be end to end encrypted, only meant for my eyes?

It seems like Proton started using end to end encryption as a buzz word, only to enhance their marketing.

I understand the distrust for Proton, but I can’t help but notice that this could be a huge upgrade for folks fleeing from Microsoft and Google suites.

Edit: But for anyone who wants to conference call with a clean conscience, check out Matrix.org.

The biggest issue I have with software like this is convincing others to switch from their trusted video call software to one that they’ve never heard before.

Agreed. The biggest reason Zoom took off is that folks could join a video chat from any platform simply by opening a link in a browser.
