Most of Gen Z are in their twenties and capable of thinking for themselves. Generally speaking, they’ve grown up accustomed to and accepting of neurodivergence, gender fluidity, and the spectrum of sexualities.
It’s the younger and older generations I’m more worried about.
I agree, that would be my preference too.
But Windows isn’t built for advanced users, it’s a mainstream OS built for the average consumer. What you and I might see as “taking control away from the user”, the general population might see as “one less confusing choice” if only they had a clue.
I’m glad you’ve finally found your home with Linux :) There are still too many frustrated Windows power users who still don’t know how much better they could have it. I use a bit of everything, btw. Platform agnostic with more Windows/MacOS experience only because the nature of my job demands it.
I manage a ton of consumer Windows devices and have seldom seen this message. It also hasn’t ever appeared on any of the multitude my own Windows devices that I’m using for hours every week.
I have also seen this message with regard to other file associations like .PDF, certain image formats, and archive formats.
Microsoft has plenty of dark patterns to try and loop users back into Microsoft Edge, but I don’t think this is one of them.
Edge just happens to be the “constant” in an ocean of variables because it ships with the OS and is integrated into so many other facets. The broken .PDF association also defaults back Edge, Image formats to Photos, Archive formats to the Explorer archive utility. I’m sure .txt would scale back to Notepad.

As this post has been incorrectly reported: Just to clarify the data usage is correctly attributed to the IP address used by the LG Washing Machine. I am monitoring the data usage more closely. What I was referencing in inaccuracy of the router is the attribution of 622 bytes to Apple iMessage. The rogue process is likely using the same port (5223) as iMessage and ASUS router is wrongly attributing it to that. There was gigabytes of data being uploaded from the IP address of the washer. I have segregated this device to its own network and logging data usage.

“Peaceful protest” was a joke friend, I was primarily responding to:
The solution to violence has literally never been “yeah, everyone should have a gun”.
In the examples that I listed, guns were literally the solution to violence.
Not that I agree with their statement, but I think an adjacent point to the top of this comment thread - and related to your point - is that while there may be plenty of guns, they’re predominantly possessed by a group of people who agree with the country’s current political direction.
Many of those who don’t agree with this direction are also those who don’t have guns and have put in a great deal of effort trying to restrict others’ access to them.
I’m definitely one who believes that things have not gotten “bad enough”, but it does seem like things could be headed that way. If we get to a true Gestapo level secret police rounding up and exterminating everyone they decide is “Antifa”, the opposition is going to have a hell of a time defending themselves with their current numbers.
We’re at a fragile turning point where further political violence, especially in any organized capacity, is likely to be weaponized to excuse extreme tyranny.
